			The SSI Policy Team is in the publishing stages for a paper that was written in the Autumn '25 quarter on nuclear non-proliferation in space. We are currently working on papers tackling the decentralization of space regulation as well as the clutter of satellites in outer space.

			The team is currently split into two major teams: Liquid R&D and IREC. The IREC team is pushing to compete in IREC 2026 in midlands Texas. In the 2025-2026 school year the team has been working on a functional airbrakes system to accurately control target altitude.

			The Liquid R&D team started in September of 2025. In the months since the team is nearly complete with the development of a test rig to cold flow and hot fire liquid engines. The team is aiming to hot fire a 60 lbf Nitrous/IPA liquid bipropellant at FAR on April 19th 2026. This will serve as a demonstrator for propellant management systems and ground station reliability. On May 3rd the team will return to FAR and attempt to Hot fire a 300 lbf Nitrous/IPA regeneratively cooled engine. The team is very excited to continue engine development in the next year and begin building flight vehicles with the R&D engines.

			Benthic landers are observation platforms that sink to the bottom of a body of water prior to resurfacing. While less flexible than submersibles or ROVs, their simplicity allows for dramatically reduced costs.

			Our first prototype has a free-floating H-frame above an anchor line. The electronics housing includes a video camera, circular LED array, GPS transmitter, and battery. A magnetic switch allows activation without opening the housing.

			The prototype was successfully tested at San Francisco’s Torpedo Wharf using a 2-hour galvanic timed release, which dropped the anchor weight and caused the lander to resurface after filming from the seabed at a depth of 5 meters. A custom Niskin bottle below the electronics housing collected a water sample.

			A second prototype, undergoing testing in Monterey Bay, includes a satellite GPS transmitter (allowing for recovery beyond the horizon), an external pressure sensor, and a sediment scoop. The frame is self-righting, ensuring the transmitter stays above the waterline after resurfacing. Replacing our compressible foam floats should enable a descent to 1,000 m and beyond.

			The Microgravity Crystallization Team—in collaboration with Rockets for the 2026 IREC Competition—is sending a payload to 30,000 feet to examine how Sodium Acetate crystalizes under microgravity.

			Microgravity provides a unique environment for growing crystals with higher structural quality than those produced on Earth. Under normal gravity, convection and sedimentation can introduce defects and uneven growth. In microgravity, the absence of buoyancy-driven fluid motion creates a diffusion-dominated environment that often produces larger, more uniform crystals. These improvements are important for applications in semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, and advanced optical materials.

			To study these effects, our team developed a rocket payload that measures nucleation density, crystal size, and growth rate of Sodium acetate trihydrate as it crystallizes in freefall from 30,000 feet. High-frame-rate imaging tracks the crystal growth front and allows comparison with identical experiments conducted under 1 g conditions.

	The avionics subteam focuses on all of the hardware on the satellite that makes the electronics system work! This "bus" hardware includes power, compute, and sensing systems. Our current flight computer, the central computer of the satellite that handles all information coming in and out and executes commands, is a modified PyCubed microcontroller that runs our CircuitPython flight code. The satellite is powered by a solar power system based off of the LT3652 chip and some NCR18650B batteries, and it also includes a sensing system with sun sensors, an inertial measurement unit (IMU), and thermistors to measure temperature.		The avionics subteam focuses on all of the hardware on the satellite that makes the electronics system work! This "bus" hardware includes power, compute, and sensing systems. Our current flight computer, the central computer of the satellite that handles all information coming in and out and executes commands, is a modified PyCubed microcontroller that runs our CircuitPython flight code. The satellite is powered by a solar power system based off of the LT3652 chip and some NCR18650B batteries, and it also includes a sensing system with sun sensors, an inertial measurement unit (IMU), and thermistors to measure temperature.

We have launched a balloon all the way across the Atlantic Ocean from California and also a balloon that has circumnavigated the globe.

Our 2nd main project, CLIPPER, aims to develop and fly a glider payload that can be returned to the launch location or another ideal location. This will solve the significant ballooning problem of having to find and retrieve payloads, often from unideal locations; it will also enable us to launch from new locations.

			Balloon payloads are launched with state-of-the-art equipment constantly re-envisioned by the team. Previous payloads include altitude control mechanics using a gas venting valve and ballast dispenser (ValBal), as well as a custom flight control system, two-way satellite communications, an intelligent altitude control algorithm, autonomous guided payload recovery and more.

The ~~Biology team works in the Shriram Center for Bioengineering and Chemical Engineering, using the [https://uytengsuteachinglab.stanford.edu/ Uytengsu Teaching Lab] space. It~~ is ~~currently developing [[Enzymatic DNA Synthesis\|enzymatic DNA synthesis methods]] and an [[Electrowetting~~ on ~~Dielectric\|electrowetting]] fluid handling platform for this project, which it aims to launch as~~ a ~~cubesat payload or operate on the International Space Station. The Biology team is also open~~ to ~~other project ideas, particularly relating~~ to ~~astronaut life support, biomaterials for space use, and terraforming for~~ space ~~colonization~~.		The Biology team is SSI's fourth project team, focusing on the intersection between the life sciences and space. The Biology Mycorockets project is building completely biodegradable rockets using mycelium. The Astropharmacy project is working on designing a plasmid to transform Bacilis to create a peptide drug in space.

			The Biology team began work on its pilot project, building a portable, autonomous [[DNA Synthesizer]] to send to space, in the 2016-2017 academic year.

The ''SSI Mars team'' seeks to push the boundaries of crewed space missions and pave the way for permanent settlement of Mars and other celestial bodies. Our projects are centered on [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_situ_resource_utilization in situ resource utilization] (ISRU), a broad group of technologies which make use of the scant resources on Mars for long-term surface missions. We turn Martian air and soil into fuel and concrete, eliminating the need to launch everything from Earth. At the same time, ISRU technologies can sustainably produce fuel and building materials for use on Earth, making our work a crucial step in fighting [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Climate_change climate change]. If we learn to live on the Red Planet, we can also save the blue one!

Furthermore, we are developing technologies to help explore uncharted regions of Mars, such as the planet's [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martian_polar_ice_caps polar ice caps]. Through the Mars Polar Rover Team, we are building a rover that will make a journey across Antarctica to set course for the South Pole on Earth. This mission will serve as a template to one day reach the corresponding polar ice caps on Mars.

It's not just Martian technology that our team works on – we are also pursuing breakthroughs on the Moon. One of our newest projects, a partnership with aerospace company [https://astrolab.space Astrolab], aims to construct a prototype excavator to dig through [https://www.nasa.gov/sites/default/files/atoms/files/05_1_snoble_thelunarregolith.pdf lunar regolith] for eventual human settlement and construction on the Moon.

	Welcome! As it says in the name, the ADCS subteam is focused on two major parts of our on-orbit operations: figuring out the orientation of the satellite, and controlling this orientation. This is a super important part of any satellite, especially ones that takes pictures like ours. For our past missions we've used sun sensors for our attitude determination and magnetorquer boards for control. The sun sensors measure how much light is hitting each of the six sides of the satellite and combine this information to roughly determine where the sun is in relation to the satellite. Magnetorquer boards spin the satellite by creating a magnetic field that interacts with the Earth's magnetic field. This interaction creates a torque on the satellite, spinning it around an axis.
